Congress makes me sick sometimes...

A bill that I don't like

What I'm curious about is this quote: " "This bill simply says that a parent has a right to know if their child is having surgery," Clay said."

I guess I'll have to read the bill in full if I want details because there *are* non-surgical abortions. Would someone assisting a minor in getting a non-surgical abortion be exempted from living within the confines of the law (if it even becomes a law...)? I hope so.

I can't even begin to list the possible ramifications if this becomes a law. Where do I start? How 'bout not at all, because just the fact that it passed in the house (or was even proposed!) is infuriating.

Hoping I don't lose *my* right to choose, too-

Ah, but as a parent, what if my child wishes to have plastic surgery? Breast augmentation? What if my child is acting on a spur of the moment decision or has impulse issues that he or she later regrets? What if my daughter is so desperate to end a pregnancy that she neglects to give a physician a full history? Just forgets to mention that she's allergic to Lidocaine? What if my child is 12?

My minor child can't enter a binding contract by law. Why should he or she be able to sign the legal documents required for any surgery?

I understand the issue. I also understand that minors can't have it both ways. If I'm fully legally responsible for their actions until they reach the age of majority, then, unless they emancipate themselves, I get the final say in the legal decisions.

However, all of that said, I hope to have the relationship with my children where this doesn't become an issue.

Here's hoping.

I hope to someday see the day when abortions are no longer necessary because sex education will be taught effectively enough to reduce the amount of unwanted pregnancies.

I'm pro-life but I think too many of my Republican pro-life counterparts are trying to have their cake and eat it too. They don't want abortion to be legal, they don't want sex ed to be taught, and they don't want birth control to be available to their teenagers...

I don't want abortion to be legal, but to get to a place where that is feasible we need better sex ed in schools and we need birth control/contraceptives to be far more readily available to teenagers.
